Your first audit

Run an AI discoverability audit in under 5 minutes

5 min readGetting Started

What you'll need

Just a URL. That's it. Compass handles the rest.

Before you start, think about what you want to test - which tasks matter for your site?

Step 1: Enter your URL

Type or paste your website's URL into the input bar at the top of the screen. Compass validates it and shows you it's ready to audit.

Tip: Start with your homepage. Compass navigates from wherever you point it, so starting at your homepage gives the most realistic picture of how an AI agent would explore your site.

Step 2: Select tasks

Tasks are the goals you want to test. "Can an AI find our pricing?" or "Can it locate the returns policy?" Each task represents something a real user might ask an AI assistant to do on your behalf.

Using presets

The quickest way to get started is with a preset - a pre-built collection of tasks for common site types:

  • SaaS Essentials - Pricing, features, demo, contact, support
  • E-commerce Basics - Products, shipping, returns, checkout
  • Content Site - Articles, categories, search, about
  • Corporate - About, careers, contact, investor relations

Click a preset to load its tasks, then add or remove individual tasks as needed.

Building your own task list

Prefer to pick manually? Browse the full library of 140+ tasks, organised by category:

  • Universal - Contact info, about pages, policies (works for any site)
  • SaaS - Pricing, features, demos, integrations
  • E-commerce - Products, shipping, returns, checkout
  • Content - Articles, categories, search
  • Financial - Rates, calculators, account access
  • Healthcare - Appointments, providers, records
  • Enterprise - Careers, investor relations, compliance

Custom tasks

Need something specific? Create a custom task by describing what you want the AI to find. Custom tasks work just like built-in ones - you can save them to reuse in future audits.

Tip: Running a task uses 1 token from your balance. Start with 3-5 tasks that matter most to your business, then expand from there.

Step 3: Choose your strategy

Three strategies, reflecting how AI agents actually find information:

Homepage Navigation AI starts on your homepage and browses - clicking through menus and links to find what it needs. Tests whether your site's information architecture works for AI agents.

Site Search AI uses Google site search to find relevant pages on your domain, then navigates from the top result. Tests whether your pages are indexed and whether AI can verify they contain the right content.

Compare Both (Recommended) Runs both strategies in parallel, showing you how each performs. This gives you the fullest picture - you'll see where navigation works, where search works, and where both fail.

Our recommendation: Start with Compare Both. It takes slightly longer but shows you the complete picture of your site's AI accessibility.

Step 4: Run the audit

Click Run Audit and watch Compass work. You'll see real-time progress:

  • Which pages it visits
  • Which links it considers at each step
  • Why it chooses each path
  • Whether it succeeds or fails for each task

Most audits complete in 30-90 seconds, depending on how many tasks you selected and how deep the AI needs to navigate.

Tip: Audits all run asynchronously. If you need to leave the page or close your browser completely, once you've submitted the audit, our servers will run it for you and it will be ready when you return. You can see all past and currently running audits on the "audits" page in the sidebar

Step 5: Review results

When the audit finishes, you'll see your overall score and a breakdown by task. Each task shows:

  • Success/Fail status - Did the AI find what it was looking for?
  • Navigation trace - The exact path it took through your site
  • Failure classification - If it failed, specifically why
  • Recommendations - What you can fix to improve

Don't worry if your first score isn't perfect. Most sites have room to improve - that's exactly why you're here.
