Answer Engine Optimisation

AEO

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of making your content discoverable and citable by AI search tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

Core Concepts

Answer engine optimisation (AEO), also known as answer engine optimization in US English, is the practice of structuring and optimising website content so that AI-powered search tools — such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and voice assistants — can find, understand, and cite it when answering user queries.

What is Answer Engine Optimisation?

Answer engines are AI tools that generate direct answers rather than presenting lists of links. They work by retrieving, synthesising, and citing content from across the web. AEO is about making your content compatible with this retrieval process.

It covers two dimensions. First, content structure — how you write and organise information so AI can extract clear answers. Second, technical accessibility — whether AI crawlers can reach and navigate your site without hitting paywalls, JavaScript blocks, or confusing navigation.

In short, AEO ensures your content isn't just visible to search engines, but actually usable by the systems that generate answers for users.

How AEO Differs from Traditional SEO

Traditional SEO focuses on ranking pages in SERPs through keyword targeting, backlinks, and on-page signals. AEO focuses on being cited as a source in AI-generated answers.

SEO works at the page level — optimising titles, meta descriptions, and content for specific queries. AEO works at the fact level — ensuring individual claims, statistics, and definitions are clearly structured and easily extractable. They're complementary practices, not competitors. A site can rank well in SERPs while still being invisible to AI agents if its content isn't structured for extraction.

Why AEO Matters Now

AI search is moving from experiment to mainstream. Google AI Overviews appear in 25-30% of searches, and ChatGPT has 800M+ weekly active users. Gartner predicts 25% of search volume could shift to AI agents by 2026.

This isn't just about traffic volume — it's about quality. Semrush research shows AI search visitors are 4.4x more valuable than traditional organic visitors, likely because they represent high-intent queries answered with specific sources.

In our own research across 269 websites with 3,348 navigation tasks, AI agents fail to complete roughly 1 in 5 tasks due to technical barriers. Sites with poor technical AEO performed significantly worse. For example, in our testing, AI agents using a search-first strategy succeeded only 64% of the time — compared to 95% with hybrid entry strategies.

Key Components of AEO

AEO spans content, structure, and technical configuration:

  • Content structure: Clear headings, direct definitions, and citable statistics
  • Schema markup: Structured data that helps AI understand context and relationships
  • Technical accessibility: Robots.txt, crawlability, and navigation that AI can follow
  • E-E-A-T signals: Demonstrable expertise and authority in your domain
  • Direct answer formatting: Information written to be extracted, not just read
