Overview
Compass includes 140+ pre-built tasks across seven categories. This reference explains each category, shows example tasks, and documents how success is determined.
Tasks represent goals a user might ask an AI agent to accomplish. "Find the pricing page" or "Locate the returns policy" — each tests whether AI can navigate to and verify specific content.
Each task includes:
- Task text — The goal an AI agent would try to accomplish
- Keywords — Terms the model looks for to identify relevant pages
- Success criteria — How Compass determines if the task was completed
- Alternative phrasings — Other ways users might express the same intent

Custom Tasks
Beyond the pre-built library, you can create custom tasks for specific needs.
When to use custom tasks
Industry-specific needs — Tasks unique to your vertical that aren't covered by defaults. For example, a logistics company might need "Find shipment tracking" or a university might need "Find course catalog."
Specific product or service pages — Instead of generic "Find pricing," you might want "Find Enterprise Widget pricing" to test a specific path.
Localised content — Tasks for specific regions, languages, or market-specific content.
Internal terminology — If your site uses specific labels or navigation patterns, custom tasks can match your exact language.
Creating custom tasks
When creating a custom task, you'll define:
- Task text — The goal, phrased as a user intent (e.g., "Find the partner application form")
- Keywords — Terms that indicate the task is being accomplished (e.g., partner, application, form, apply, join)
- Success criteria — How to verify the task was completed (e.g., "Page contains a partner application form or instructions for becoming a partner")
Custom tasks use the same ML+LLM pipeline as built-in tasks, so they benefit from the same semantic understanding and navigation capabilities.
Tips for effective custom tasks
- Be specific — "Find enterprise pricing" is better than "Find pricing information" if you want to test a specific path
- Include variations — Add alternative phrasings users might actually use
- Define clear success — Ambiguous success criteria lead to unreliable results
- Test incrementally — Start with a few custom tasks and refine based on results
Choosing the right tasks
Start broad
Use Universal tasks plus one industry pack for your first audit. This gives you baseline coverage without overwhelming results.
Then focus
After seeing results, add specific tasks for areas that failed or matter most to your business. Use sub-projects to organise deep-dive analyses.
Quality over quantity
Testing 10 relevant tasks well is better than testing 50 generic ones. Focus on tasks that represent real user intents for your site.
